The U.S. [hen-ui-link href=”https://nursejournal.org/articles/the-us-nursing-shortage-state-by-state-breakdown/”]nurse-to-state per 1,000 population ratio[/hen-ui-link] is 9.22, while in Montana it is 8.92, including 10,020 employed registered nurses with a state population of 1,122,867.[/hen-ui-text][hen-ui-text variant=”b4″]Nursing shortages [hen-ui-link href=”https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/11887781/” target=”_blank”]have been cyclical[/hen-ui-link] from the 1970s through the 1990s, but the current shortage, which [hen-ui-link href=”https://www.nashgroup.com/us-nursing-shortage-part-i/” target=”_blank”]began roughly in 2012[/hen-ui-link], is greater than any other the country has experienced in the past. Several factors have [hen-ui-link href=”https://www.aacnnursing.org/news-data/fact-sheets/nursing-shortage” target=”_blank”]contributed to the national nursing shortage[/hen-ui-link], including a [hen-ui-link href=”https://nursejournal.org/articles/states-with-the-largest-nursing-faculty-shortage/”]shortage of nursing school faculty[/hen-ui-link] and nursing school enrollment that isn’t growing fast enough to meet the demand.
